In honor of International Women’s Day, Marvel Studios Cinematic Universe latest film, Captain Marvel, premiered worldwide on March 8th. Starring Oscar winner for Best Actress Brie Larson (Room, 2015) and Samuel L. Jackson (Pulp Fiction, 1994), Captain Marvel is the 21st film of the MCU, and their first movie led by a female hero.

Captain Marvel was written and directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck (Half Nelson, 2006), with the participation of the writer Nicole Perlman, who had previously worked on Guardians of the Galaxy (2014). The story is set in the 90’s and introduces us to Captain Marvel, also known as Carol Danvers, a Kree warrior with incredible powers that comes to Earth chasing the Skrulls, an alien race of villains with shapeshifting abilities. Captain Marvel is joined by a young Nick Fury (played by Samuel L. Jackson since his first appearance in Iron Man, 2008). Together, they hunt down the Skrulls as they discover the motives of their arrival and Carol Danvers’ secret past on Earth.

The film tells us an origin story unlike any other, in which we learn about the hero as she herself discovers the mysteries of a past she doesn’t remember. Spectators can enjoy the hero’s development as they get to know Nick Fury’s background, whose participation is crucial within the overall narrative of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Although the desire was to make a different story, the presentation of the hero during the first act is filled with too many unimportant details for the character’s development, making it difficult for the audience to empathize with Carol Danvers and weakening the dramatic strength of the climax.

Despite that, Captain Marvel is a great superhero movie, further expanding the limits of the Marvel Universe and establishing themes, settings and opportunities for new stories to be told. At My Family Cinema we believe that Captain Marvel is a must-watch for comics and movie fans alike, while we wait for the resolution of more than 20 years of stories with the premiere of Avengers: Endgame on April 26th 2019, where we will see the great Captain Marvel in action once again.
